Starting an NVQ with The Carlton Institute

By | September 22, 2014

The beauty industry is flourishing in the UK, meaning that NVQs in related subjects, such as massage and beauty therapy, are becoming increasingly desirable. With this in mind, our team has created a handy guide to starting a NVQ with The Carlton Institute to help you wade through the initial paperwork and help allay any fears you may have about the lessons and the coursework involved.

Your NVQ pack

Upon enrolling with the institute a pack will be provided to you containing all of the important paperwork required for your course. The pack will include the following items:

  • your assessment book
  • question packs testing your knowledge and understanding of the subject
  • charts to document your case studies
  • a ‘Dear Student’ pack.

These items are vital to your course and must be maintained so it is important to understand why each one is required for your qualification and your eventual portfolio in particular.

‘Dear Student’ Pack

The ‘Dear Student’ pack will provide you with all the information new students require about the institute and the support on offer for NVQ level 2 and 3 students.

Furthermore the packs will also document the equipment required for each of your training days so that new students have a handy check list of the things that they need to bring to lessons. Examples include informing students of when they may need to bring an additional person to act as a model with them to demonstrate their work or when instructions need to be provided to the institute in regards to any beauty schools you attend.

Finally the pack will also introduce students to LINK and provide information on presenting case studies, completing the provided assessment book and your general portfolio.

The Assessment Book

This will not be required in the early stages of your NVQ however it will become important once case studies are completed and it comes time to hand in your portfolio., so ensure that it is kept safe until it is needed.

Question sheets

You will find a number of these sheets in your pack and they must be completed and handed in alongside your case studies.

  • Please note that these questions need only be completed once, rather than as part of each individual case study.
  • Please provide your answers to each question in the box provided and be sure to keep your answers neat and concise to best make use of the space.
  • Try not to over-complicate your answers and only provide the information that is required by each question.
  • Also note that further questions are provided following the consultation sheets and should be answered in the same manner.

Range charts

The Range Charts will provide information on which case studies need to be completed as part of your course, with further instructions where required. Use this chart as a check list for each of your case studies before handing it in at the end of your assignment as part of your portfolio, where additional details will be added as required.

Consultation Sheets

As part of each case study you undertake you will be asked to fill out a consultation sheet, so be sure to photocopy extra sheets using the blank sheet provided in the pack. Where possible include photographs as part of each consultation sheet to provide visual evidence of the treatment undertaken. Do not worry if any clients are unwilling to be photographed and ensure that you don’t attempt to force the issue if this happens.
