What do they do?
Administer a range of beauty treatments and massage to clients in a salon, spa or in their own homes (Mobile Beauty Therapist). If you work in a salon you may also be promoting and selling beauty products.
What qualifications are required?
To work in a salon or spa (employed) you will often require a NVQ level 2 or 3 qualification. This can take up to 2 years training.
To work as a self employed such as a Mobile Beauty Therapist you only require professional indemnity insurance so that you are covered if a claim is made against you. To be able to obtain this insurance you will need at least a diploma in the respective treatment from an accredited source such as the Carlton Institute.
How much can I earn?
Employed therapists (in salons and spas) will earn around 13 thousand a year to start with. This will rise to around 18 thousand after a few years experience. Working on a cruise ship will pay more.
Self employed mobile therapists who work full time have the capacity earn much more.
